Welcome to the Artes Latinae
Family
You and your family
can begin today to enjoy a lifetime of benefits through the study
of the Latin language and culture.
To help introduce you gently to the CD-ROM version
of Artes Latinae and the programmed learning approach, we would
like to answer several questions you may have about our program.
How often should I repeat the sound?
Generally we recommend that you repeat the sound at least twice.
This will give the oral reinforcement that is so important in the
learning process. The sound allows the student using the self-teaching
approach to hear accurate Latin pronunciation and to have an interactive
experience through listening and responding. In other words, the
sound engages the student like a teacher.
What pronunciation should I select
on the CD-ROM?
We have selected the American Scholastic Classical Pronunciation as the default
pronunciation. Since this was the pronunciation used by Dr. Waldo Sweet, the original author. However, you may choose the restored Classical Pronuncitaion because there is sufficient evidence that this was
the pronunciation used in the Classical Period. Prof. Robert Sonkowsky
has assimilated these restored sounds into his readings. These sounds
do not differ to a great extent from American scholastic pronunciation.
If you have studied Latin before using a classical pronunciation,
it may be that our American scholastic pronunciation will seem more
familiar to you and you may feel more comfortable using that pronunciation.
The continental/ecclesiastical pronunciation that we have adopted
in this program is one of many variants. Ecclesiastical pronunciations
are more appropriately used with medieval texts and Latin music.
See your program's manual for more detailed descriptions of the
different pronunciations.
What should I do if the sound is
unclear?
If your sound is unclear, you will need to check your sound card
documentation for correct configuration under windows.
When does the actual study of Latin
grammar begin?
Units two and three teach Latin pronunciation. You will begin to
study Latin grammar in unit four.
The tests for units two and three
require "the teacher" to pronounce certain Latin vowels.
Who is supposed to check my pronunciation?
Don't panic! As you work through the program, you will be able to
check it yourself. Also, you will gain confidence and ability as
you work through the program. Since these units contain repeated
practice in pronunciation, you may choose to skip the tests for
units two and three and begin testing with unit four.
Is there anyone available to help
me if I have a problem?
See the back of this sheet listing the Latin network of experts
for help in Latin. For any program questions, call the technical
help line.
